How to Fix Short Term Memory Loss

Everyone has occasional memory problems, but if memory lapses disrupt your daily activities, it may be time to see a doctor. Although there are a number of causes of cognitive impairment, some causes of short-term memory loss are reversible. Following a comprehensive physical and neurological examination to rule out a brain tumor, stroke or other brain disease, there are things you can do to prevent or delay memory loss.

Instructions

    1

Identify any existing medical issues. If left untreated, some medical problems can speed the rate of memory loss. Depression, alcohol abuse, certain medications, and vitamin and hormone deficiencies may cause short-term memory loss.

    2

Exercise. It improves cognitive functioning, particularly memory and reaction time. Using your muscles activates chemical receptors in the brain as well as promotes the growth of new nerve cells.

    3

Maintain a healthy diet. Consume more monounsaturated fatty acids such as those found in nuts, olive oil, avocados, pork, poultry and fish. Increase fiber intake and eat plenty of fruits and vegetables that are high in antioxidants. These substances may prevent age-related memory loss by helping maintain the strength of brain cells as individuals age.

    4

Take nutritional supplements. A study published by the National Academy of Sciences suggests that vitamin B-12 deficiency may be related to cognitive decline. Vitamins C and E are antioxidants, which may also protect against the development of dementia. Melatonin is a supplement that may improve mood and memory by helping an individual to get better quality sleep.

    5

Consider herbal supplements. Talk to your doctor about the safety of medicinal herbal supplements such as gingko biloba. Extracts of the herb may improve cognitive performance related to early stage cognitive decline associated with aging. Properties of the herb have been linked to increased blood flow to the brain, especially in older individuals. The herb is also known to have powerful antioxidant properties believed to reduce the harmful effects of free radicals on the body's cells.

    6

Compensate for minor gaps in memory. Keep your belongings tidy and organized. Remind yourself aloud where you are putting things. Leave written reminders for yourself, label items with directions for use, keep a diary of day-to-day activities and write down appointments. Keeping your mind actively involved and adhering to a consistent daily routine can help keep your short-term or working memory sharper.
