How to Calculate Calories From Protein Grams

How to Calculate Calories From Protein Grams

Protein is an important part of your diet, helping your body build muscle, repair tissue and stay in good respiratory and cardiovascular shape. Unfortunately, studies show many people don't eat as much protein as they need in order to maintain their health. The benefits of adding protein to your diet are numerous. If you're concerned with calories, here's how you can know how many are in your protein-rich foods.

Instructions

    1

Find out how many grams of protein are in each serving of your food. The nutritional information should be listed on the item's packaging. If it's not, try looking it up online using a nutritonial search engine.

    2

Determine how many servings of the food you'll eat. This is an important step, since the number of calories in your meal varies greatly depending on how many servings you eat.

    3

Multiply the number of grams protein in each serving by the number of servings you'll eat or have eaten. For example, the average hamburger has about 48 grams of protein. If you consume 2 of them, you will have eaten roughly 96 grams of protein.

    4

Multiply the total grams of protein in your meal by 4. This provides you with the number of calories you've gotten from the protein alone. To use the example from above, there would be 384 calories from protein in the 2 burgers.

    5

Remember that carbs and protein have the same number of calories per gram, 4, so you can use this conversion for both.
